WISLI Tuition Scholarship

A supplemental competition to study Swahili or Yoruba at the intermediate-advanced level is now open.

A WISLI Tuition Scholarship covers 50% of the tuition for summer language study.  The WISLI Tuition Scholarship aims to broaden support for learning less commonly taught languages. See Tuition and Fees for information about estimated costs for the WISLI Summer session.

Eligibility:  All WISLI applicants are eligible to apply, including adult learners, domestic and international students, and students in degree programs at UW-Madison and other institutions of higher learning.

WISLI Tuition Scholarships are made possible through the generous support of the International Division’s Office of the Dean. Learn more about the International Division at international.wisc.edu.

Before You Submit

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all application materials are complete and submitted on time. To apply for a WISLI Tuition Scholarship, you will need to:

  1. Have submitted a complete application to study at WISLI.
  2. Prepare a one-page Statement of Purpose describing your personal, academic, and/or professional goals, and explain how these goals connect to your interest in language study at WISLI. Address the broader impact you hope your language study will have. (This statement may be the same document submitted for your general WISLI program application – no changes are needed!).
  3. Prepare a brief Statement of Financial Need addressing any major sources of income for academic study, the financial support needed to participate in WISLI, and other circumstances that may demonstrate your need for support.
  4. Solicit one letter of recommendation. The recommender must email their letter to wisli@lpo.wisc.edu. If your program or another financial aid application requires letters, those exact same letters can be re-submitted for this application.
  5. Complete the general WISLI Tuition Scholarship application.

NOTE: Applicants must complete separate applications if applying multiple languages and address the rationale in their statement of purpose.

Award Notifications and Distribution

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Those offered an award must accept or decline within two weeks of receiving the award letter.

The WISLI Tuition Scholarship will be applied directly to tuition costs. Recipients of the WISLI Tuition Scholarship must complete the entire 8-week program with a passing grade.

Awards are competitive. See the WISLI funding page for additional resources and suggestions for identifying other funding sources.

What A WISLI Tuition Scholarship Does NOT Cover

The WISLI Tuition Scholarship excludes expenses such as segregated fees, textbooks, living expenses, housing, incidentals, travel, or other costs.  International students are required to have UW–Madison approved health insurance coverage and may need to enroll in the UW Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) if not able to get a waiver. Students who have not previously attended UW–Madison will be charged a one-time official document fee of $130.00.
