How WISLI Works

Based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes (WISLI) hosts seven summer language institutes that offer high-quality, proficiency-based courses in over 30 less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) – from Arabic and Bangla to Vietnamese and Uzbek – and at multiple levels, from Elementary through Advanced.

Our 8-week programs are the equivalent of one year of language study during the academic year (i.e., two semesters). Thus, students receive eight credits and two transcript letter grades. Classes run for four hours a day, Monday through Friday.

Who Comes to WISLI

Undergraduates, graduate students, and adult learners– both domestic and international – participate in WISLI each summer to work toward their multilingual goals for diverse academic, scholarly, professional, and personal reasons.

Our alumni are well-prepared for subsequent language use and training at home and abroad.

All WISLI students are considered UW-Madison students for the summer and have access to all campus resources, including the university’s vast library databases, University Health Services, the McBurney Disability Resource Center, recreation centers, and more.

Due to the intensive program, WISLI participants are discouraged from taking on external commitments and responsibilities, including doctoral research, part-time or full-time employment or care-giving responsibilities, and any other activity that limits their ability to devote the adequate time necessary to succeed in this program (approximately 8 hours per day).

What Makes WISLI Stand Out

  1. WISLI is ideal for those who cannot fit language into their schedules during the academic year and wish to study a language not taught at their home institution.
  2. WISLI’s proficiency-based approach to instruction means that the primary goal is to develop learners’ language abilities and knowledge to navigate a wide range of real-world situations. WISLI works with a variety of campus partners to employ inclusive teaching strategies and student-centered practices.
  3. Small course sizes allow for a more immersive and interactive learning experience. Co-curricular programming provides additional language practice and cultural learning.
  4. WISLI actively prioritizes both students’ multilingual and professional development through such events as the WISLI Student Conference, LCTL Career Fair, and the WISLI Professional Development Workshop that also promote cross-program community building and networking opportunities.
  5. Hear from our alumni to learn more about what you can expect from WISLI!
