About the lecture:

This presentation centers on the evolution of Yoruba music from traditional spiritual chants to contemporary Afrobeats. By exploring the key genres in Yoruba music, the talk highlights recurring themes of identity, spirituality, and community. It shows how Yoruba music continues to adapt, inspire, and connect cultures across time and borders.

About the speaker:

Dr. Kazeem Sanuth specializes in second language acquisition and applied linguistics, with a focus on African languages and second language pedagogy. He holds an M.A. in African Languages and Literature and a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition, concentrating on Yoruba study abroad, language learning in the context of multilingualism and superdiversity, intercultural communication, and curriculum development. As Associate Director of the National African Language Resource Center (NALRC), he leads instructional material development, professional training workshops, and initiatives supporting African language education. His interdisciplinary research is published in Applied Linguistics, JMIR Cancer, and Routledge’s Sharing Less Commonly Taught Languages in Higher Education. He has contributed to critical resources, including the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Yoruba (ACTFL, 2018) and a multiliteracies-based Yoruba instructional project at the University of Florida. Dr. Sanuth has taught Yoruba at prestigious institutions across the U.S. and now offers courses on African multilingualism and global engagement at Indiana University Bloomington. He is currently the President of the American Association of Teachers of Yorùbá (AATY) and has variously held leadership roles in the African Language Teachers Association (ALTA).
