Erin G
Credentials: 2024 WISLI Elementary Dari Student

Why did you choose to study at WISLI? What motivated you to choose our program?
I chose to study at WISLI because it’s one of the very programs to offer Dari, which I wanted to focus on (as opposed to Iranian Farsi). The online option was another factor, as I could not relocate for the summer.
How has learning a less commonly taught language enriched your personal and professional life?
Learning a less commonly taught language (LCTL) has enriched my personal and professional life precisely because it is something unique and useful that I can offer. When someone hears that I study Dari, it usually sparks a conversation about my work, my travels, and my future plans. It definitely helps me stand out. Personally, learning a LCTL also opens doors into culture, music, and literature that are often less accessible. And it helps me make meaningful connections with speakers of the language, often sharing laughs at my frequent language mistakes!
What about WISLI/UW-Madison stands out to you?
WISLI has one of the best selections of LCTLs out there! The availability of scholarships and the ease of registration also put WISLI at the top of the list of language programs.
How do you plan to apply proficiency of your target language and cultural skills to your personal/professional journey?
Learning Dari is essential for my professional life, as I work with Afghans in both the US and abroad. I already apply my language and culture skills in my current work, which gives me an opportunity to continue to practice and learn. Develop my Dari proficiency will also prepare me for future professional opportunities.
What were some of the highlights of your program? What events did you particularly enjoy?
I really enjoyed participating in the WISLI Student Conference. I was impressed and intrigued by other students’ presentations, which covered a range of fascinating topics. And it was great opportunity to get to share my work outside of my usual global health networks.
What role did the WISLI Tuition Scholarship play when you were making decisions? How would you encourage other students who might be interested in the scholarship to apply?
The WISLI Tuition Scholarship was pivotal in enabling me to participate in the program. I would encourage other scholarship applicants to really highlight how they will apply the language skills they want to gain to their academic and professional goals, and how they will continue their language development beyond the program.
What advice would you give to students who want to study the same language as you?
I would suggest that students wanting to study Dari spend some time familiarizing themselves with the alphabet before starting a summer intensive course. It really helps to have this foundation beforehand and will make the first week or so much easier.
What is your favorite expression in the language you studied this summer?
قطرهقطرهدریامیشود Drop by drop, a river is formed
