2024 WISLI Indonesian Student

Why did you choose to study at WISLI? What motivated you to choose our program?

I was motivated to study at WISLI because it was the only US-based intensive language program that offered Indonesian and was available in the summer. In addition, I’ve struggled with non-intensive language acquisition courses in the past and wanted to see how I’d do in an intensive setting.

How has learning a less commonly taught languages enriched your personal and professional life?

Learning a less commonly taught language has enriched me with the perspective that being correct all the time is not an indicator that I am learning. Acknowledging and accepting my mistakes while working to improve them is the indicator that I’m learning and embracing the experience.

What about WISLI/UW-Madison stands out to you?

UW-Madison is a beautiful campus. One of my favorite parts about this experience has been enjoying what UW-Madison has to offer its students- from the academic resources to the dining and entertainment.

How do you plan to apply proficiency of your target language and cultural skills to your personal/professional journey?

I plan to apply my language proficiency and cultural skills in Indonesian to my academic and professional journeys, in which I can actively apply what I’ve learned to my research endeavors. One day, I aim to speak confidently with my research participants in the language they’re most comfortable with, understand cultural contexts, and write texts in Indonesian that are accessible to all Indonesian speakers.

What were some of the highlights of your program? What events did you particularly enjoy?

I’ve particularly enjoyed “Kelas Bersama” on Fridays where all the students from each level of Indonesian have “class together” and we do fun activities that allow us to practice our Indonesian and learn about the culture. My favorite Kelas Bersama experience was the Nasi Goreng (fried rice) cooking competition! I also really enjoyed the SEASSI Poetry Cafe.

What role did the WISLI Tuition Scholarship play when you were making decisions? How would you encourage other students who might be interested in the scholarship to apply?

Without the WISLI Tuition Scholarship, I would not have been able to afford participating in my language program. To encourage other students interested in applying for the scholarship, I would remind them that WISLI wants to support them in their language acquisition journey, but that WISLI can’t help them unless they ask.

What advice would you give to students who want to study the same language as you?

I’d encourage students wanting to study Indonesian to dive into Indonesian movies, shows, music, cuisine, history, and current events. This would help them become familiar with the language’s sounds, expressions, and cultural context, thus deepening their appreciation for the language. I’d also advise students to take advantage of language apps like Duolingo!

What is your favorite expression in the language you studied this summer?

“Waduh, sayang sekali.” – “Wow, what a shame.”
