  • Language History

  • If you have learned this language informally, briefly indicate the situation (i.e., in your home, or residence in a target language-speaking country, etc.) and describe your degree of proficiency in the four basic language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing).
  • Include each institution where you have studied the target language formally. For all answers, please include: the institution name, course name & level, instructor(s), hours per week spent in class, and text book(s) covered.
  • Personal Statement

    We strongly recommend that you write your essay in a separate document and cut-and-paste it into this application. Text styles (e.g. bold or underlined) may be stripped out in the application.
  • Recommendations

    Two letters of recommendation are required as part of your application. Applicants with no background in their target language are encouraged to have a teacher of another foreign language submit one of the letters, whereas those who have studied their target language formally should have their instructor submit one of the letters. For those who do not have a relevant language reference, students should ask for a second letter from someone who is aware of their current academic progress. Educators and professionals may request letters from persons best qualified to give a meaningful appraisal. One of the references should be able to speak to your ability to work independently, even if the letter is not from a language instructor.
