Elliot Napier
2023 WISLI Kazakh Student
Why did you choose to study at WISLI? What motivated you to choose our program?
I chose to study at WISLI because of the program’s strong reputation for developing solid language skills in a short time. I’ve wanted to learn Kazakh to support my research for a long time, but finding a good course with the financial support I needed had proved difficult. I was pleased to hear about WISLI/CESSI from friends who had taken the course.
How has learning a less commonly taught languages enriched your personal and professional life?
Learning Kazakh has really enabled me to move closer to a decolonial approach to my research. Up until now, I could only speak to research participants in what are, for many of them, foreign languages that are often linked to colonial legacies. Knowing Kazakh allows me to approach my research with greater respect for Kazakhstan’s culture and people.
What about WISLI/UW-Madison stands out to you?
The supportive and creative atmosphere at WISLI was incredible. The flexibility of the instructors to teach to the individual needs of the students was also amazing.
How do you plan to apply proficiency of your target language and cultural skills to your personal/professional journey?
I’m hoping that with a little more practice and self-study, I might soon be able to conduct research interviews in Kazakh.
What were some of the highlights of your program? What events did you particularly enjoy?
The city of Madison was definitely one of the highlights. It’s a really lovely place to live and study for summer. Of course, I didn’t expect to dislike Madison, but I was really surprised by how much I liked it. There’s so much happening, the people are so friendly, and there’s always something fun happening.
What role did the WISLI Tuition Scholarship play when you were making decisions? How would you encourage other students who might be interested in the scholarship to apply?
There’s no question that the WISLI Tuition Scholarship was a key factor in deciding to come to Madison. Without it, there is simply no way I would have been able to afford to take an intensive Kazakh course. Students interested in the scholarship should definitely reach out to their institute and find out more. Receiving the scholarship has had an incredible impact on my studies and research.
What advice would you give to students who want to study the same language as you?
Apply to CESSI! They won’t regret it. The course itself is great, the instructors are wonderful, and I’ve met so many great new friends.
