Non-native Speakers of English Needed for Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) in English at the Pyle Center on December 16-17 (30-minute commitment on one of the days).
Would you be interested in an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) volunteer opportunity? The goal of the workshop is to train instructors to assess language learners’ speaking proficiency through an OPI. The workshop will be held at the Pyle Center on the UW-Madison campus. Participation in person is preferred, however, using Zoom is an option. If you are a US citizen or a permanent resident, we can provide a $20 gift card in compensation for volunteering. If you are not a US citizen or a permanent resident, we unfortunately can’t compensate you for volunteering but will have snacks on hand as a token of thanks.
Volunteers will take the OPI with one of the instructors participating in the workshop. The OPI itself will last no more than 10-15 minutes. The OPI will be a conversation in English about you – your interests, daily routine, past experiences, ideas, and thoughts. Only the instructors participating in the workshop are being tested, and not you, so you should feel free to relax and just practice speaking English. By volunteering, you will gain valuable experience in how an OPI is structured, should you decide to take the OPI in the future to have your spoken English proficiency formally assessed. (Unfortunately, since this workshop is to provide training for instructors, you will not receive your OPI rating.) Please contact us sealc@intl.wisc.edu if you would like to volunteer or if you have questions. Thank you very much for considering this invitation. Find out more by accessing the PDF files below.
